TBT - Record Store Day is today, April 16. As Bob Marley's son Ziggy put it, record stores keep social contact alive and bring people together. Ziggy's quoted on the Record Store Day web site saying, "Without the independent record stores the community breaks down with everyone sitting in front of their computers."

Some of you may be hearing the term "Record Store Day" for the first time, and some who grew up only knowing CDs and MP3s may even be confused by what a "record" is. Don't worry, we'll walk you through the three most important things to know about Record Store Day. But first, a little history about the annual event.

Originally conceived in 2007, according to the RSD site, the idea was created to celebrate the "unique culture surrounding over 700 independently-owned record stores in the US." The annual event was kicked off officially byMetallica at Rasputin Music in San Fransisco, Calif. on April 19, 2008. It's now celebrated the third Saturday in April every year.

So what's so special about a day honoring vinyl records? RSD means vinyl fans have the opportunity to purchase special, limited-edition records and CDs that are only available on RSD. Also, hundreds of musicians and artists across the world make special appearances, play shows, and DJ within their local record stores.

Not just any store can be a RSD participant (sorry, Best Buy). Qualified stores are defined as a retailer whose primary business focus is on a physical store location. So, no online retailers are eligible. Also, "independent" means the store is not owned by a corporation. The store has complete control over its merchandise, store policies, and promotions, meaning not every single independent record store in the world is participating in RSD.

As a market far smaller than that of the online music, most record stores see RSD as a huge success and a way to bring in probably the most money in one day they'll make all year.
