TBT - A 12-hour plane flight may seem daunting to some, but I look at it as uninterrupted time to do what I love—code new products. My bi-monthly trips from London to Tokyo and California are how I spend my 20 percent time—what I consider my "license to innovate." It was on a flight to Tokyo that I first built what became Chrome to Phone, an Android app and Chrome extension that allows you to instantly send content—like a webpage, map or YouTube video—from your Chrome browser to your Android device.

As an engineering director, I spend the bulk of my time managing software engineers and various projects. As a result, there's not a lot of time to just sit at my desk and code, and it's possible for my technical skills to become rusty. So on one of my frequent cross-continent trips, I decided to take the opportunity—and time—to brush up on my engineering skills by exploring device-to-device interaction, an area that has a lot of potential in our increasingly connected world. I'd never written a Chrome extension or used App Engine, a platform that allows developers to build web applications on the same scalable systems that power Google's own applications and services. But rather than sleeping or reading a book, I spent my flight figuring it out. And somewhere over Belgium on my way to Japan, I had a working prototype of Chrome to Phone.



A few days later, on my trip back to London, I emailed my prototype to Andy Rubin and Linus Upson, who lead the Android and Chrome engineering teams. Before my plane even landed, they'd both given the product their blessing. With a little help from a developer in Mountain View and a user interface designer back in London, we tidied things up and ultimately launched the open source code for Chrome to Phone at Google I/O just two months later. TBT - At 3:40 p.m. Friday, Chicago time, it will be exactly 100 years to the minute since someone tossed a cigarette into a bin of scrap cloth on the 8th floor of the Asch Building on New York's Lower East Side, touching off what for the last century has been known as the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.

It was a Saturday, so only 600 of the usual 1,000 employees — 500 women and girls and 100 men — were working. Their 12-hour shift over, they had put their street clothes on, collected their pay envelopes — $6 a week — and were waiting for the bell. Ten minutes later the place would have been empty.

The fire raced through the 8th floor, fed by piles of lint, linen hanging on wires from the ceiling and oil stored in the open to keep the machines running. It spread to the 9th and 10th floors, sending panicked workers running to the two fire escapes. One was anchored to the outside of the building, down into the alley. The other was inside.

The building was 11 years old, considered both "modern" — it was served by four elevators — as well as "fireproof." But the ladders between the levels of the outside escape were missing — those who fled there couldn't get down. And the doors to the inside fire escape were locked, to prevent theft.

The first fire engine company to respond arrived in minutes, firemen dodging what at first they thought were bolts of cloth being tossed from the burning building.

They weren't bolts of cloth, but workers leaping to escape the flames. The firemen raced to set up their ladders, but they needn't have hurried — the ladders fell 20 feet short.

The streets filled with onlookers watching in horror as those trapped above were squeezed between burning and falling to death. Most were teenage girls from immigrant families — Italians, Russians, Germans; most "could barely speak English."The weight of the women on the back fire escape tore it from its moorings and sent it crashing into the alley, killing everyone on it.

The crowd on the street shouted "don't jump!" but the seamstresses had little choice.

Five girls watched from one window as the firemen tried to work a ladder to them but couldn't reach. "They leaped together," the New York Times reported the next day, "clinging to each other, with fire streaming back from their hair and dresses." [via - suntimes]

Cherokee is an Iroquoian language spoken by the Cherokee people. The Cherokee syllabary writing system was developed by Sequoyah in the early 19th century. He realized the power of writing systems, and wanted his people to benefit from that power. Some of the 85 characters he developed for his syllabary were modified from his original handwritten script for a printing press in the 1820s, resulting in characters that resemble Latin and Greek letters. Despite the resemblance, they are pronounced differently. The modified script was quickly adapted for printing Cherokee newspapers, books and pamphlets. The adoption and use of the script enabled the Cherokee people to maintain their language and culture. Today, Cherokee is spoken mostly in the states of Oklahoma and North Carolina. TBT - The Oxford-English Dictionary just added 45,436 new phrases as words, and among them is the first symbol to ever grace the volume, '♥.'
The tome that often sets the English language apparently likes to stay current, adding words every three months. Some frequent online acronyms are also now approved by The Authority, giving instant relief to word nazis during instant message conversations all across the world. Phrases like FYI, OMG and LOL? They're totally legit now.

So, why add ♥ as a word? A spokesperson clarified, "While symbols do become spelt-out words relatively frequently, it is usually only with a mundane meaning as the name of the symbol… It's very unusual for it to happen in such an evocative and tangential way."

There is also some new, not-quite-as-fun words getting some recognition in the dictionary. The other ones include 'muffin top,' 'singledom' (something usually noticed on Valentine's day), 'banh mi' (a Vietnamese sandwich), and 'dotbomb' (see the late 90s for reference).

Kedatangan Arnold Schwarzenegger itu berkaitan dengan pertemuan para gubernur sedunia untuk membahas masalah iklim atau Governors Climate Forum, yang akan digelar di Palangkaraya, September mendatang.

Gubernur Kalteng Teras Narang di Palangkaraya, Jumat (25/3/2010), mengatakan, Governors Climate Forum akan diadakan di Palangkaraya namun gedung pertemuannya belum ditetapkan.

"Arnold sebagai aktivis lingkungan yang memberi perhatian besar terhadap masalah iklim direncanakan datang sebagai pembicara," katanya.

Kalteng terpilih sebagai tuan rumah karena panitia acara menilai provinsi itu konsisten mengatasi masalah lingkungan sejak lima tahun terakhir dan mengalami kemajuan. Penunjukan berdasarkan penilaian tim independen yang menganggap, persoalan lingkungan di Kalteng dan Indonesia tak mudah untuk diatasi.

Gubernur-gubernur yang hadir berasal dari sekitar 30 negara antara lain Amerika Serikat, Brazil, dan Malaysia. Setiap negara rata-rata mengirimkan satu hingga dua gubernur. Selain Arnold, gubernur yang diketahui akan hadir dalam acara tersebut yakni Simao Jatene dari negara bagian Para di Brazil.

Adapun jumlah undangan secara keseluruhan diperkirakan sekitar 600-800 orang. Gubernur yang mendapat undangan dinilai memiliki komitmen dan kepedulian untuk menerapkan solusi terhadap masalah perubahan iklim serta kemauan tinggi untuk mereduksi emisi karbon. Selain itu, lanjut Teras, mereka juga melakukan upaya untuk menanggulangi pembalakan serta penambangan liar.

"Tak semua gubernur di Indonesia diundang. Saya tidak tahu berapa dan siapa saja gubernur yang akan diundang karena itu masih dibahas panitia," ujarnya.

Governors Climate Forum merupakan prakarsa Arnold. Acara tahunan yang diadakan sejak tahun 2007 itu digagas saat ia menjadi Gubernur California.

Selain diskusi, pertemuan itu juga menjadi ajang para gubernur untuk saling belajar mengenai penanganan masalah iklim di wilayah masing-masing. "Soal hasil yang diharapkan akan dicapai nanti, saya belum tahu tapi biasanya berupa kesepakatan dan rekomendasi," tuturnya.

Kepala Biro Humas dan Protokol Kalteng, Kardinal Tarung menjelaskan, rencana mengenai lokasi Governors Climate Forum diterima pihak Pemerintah Provinsi Kalteng saat rombongan gubernur berkunjung ke Brazil pada 13-19 Maret lalu. Saat itu, rombongan menghadiri acara dengan persoalan yang dibahas masih terkait erat dengan Governors Climate Forum yakni upaya untuk mereduksi emisi karbon melalui pelestarian hutan atau REDD+.

"Permasalah ini semakin besar karena kantor utama Facebook di Amerika Serikat. Ini berarti membutuhkan waktu lama bagi polisi untuk mendapatkan informasi kejahatan online hanya dengan surat perintah," ujarnya kepada media Australia ZDNet.

Ia menambahkan, Facebook seringkali menghapus keberadaan profil pedofil begitu cepat sebelum polisi memperoleh cukup bukti. Terkait masalah ini, Facebook bersikeras tidak ingin mengubah kebijakan.

"Ini adalah kebodohan atas nama Facebook. Kami tidak dapat menahan diri untuk menginformasikan kepada mereka betapa mengecewakannya referensi data pembuktian akibat sikap mereka," kata Edward lagi.

Di sisi lain, Facebook tidak setuju dianggap menghambat upaya penegakan hukum.

"Kami secara rutin memberikan perhatian penuh jika terjadi kasus darurat serta memberikan bantuan dalam penyelidikan atau proses hukum. Keselamatan dan keamanan pengguna kami adalah hal terpenting.
