Geneve ( AP ) : The World Health Organization declared the swine flu pandemic officially over Tuesday, months after many national authorities started canceling vaccine orders and shutting down hot lines as the disease ebbed from the headlines.WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the organization's emergency committee of top flu experts advised her that the pandemic had "largely run its course" and the world is no longer in phase six — the highest influenza alert level.

"I fully agree with the committee's advice," Chan told reporters in a telephone briefing from her native Hong Kong.The virus has now entered the "post-pandemic" phase, meaning disease activity around the world has returned to levels usually seen for seasonal influenza, she said. But Chan cautioned against complacency, saying that even though hospitalizations and deaths have dropped sharply, countries should still keep a watchful eye for unusual patterns of infection and mutations that might render existing vaccines and antiviral drugs ineffective.

"It is likely that the virus will continue to cause serious disease in younger age groups," she said, urging high-risk groups such as pregnant women to continue seeking vaccination. Unusually, swine flu hits young adults harder than the over-65s, who are believed to have some immunity to the A(H1N1) strain. At least 18,449 people have died worldwide since the outbreak began in April 2009. WHO said last week that the true figure is likely to be higher, but the organization's flu chief, Keiji Fukuda, said a final number won't be known for some months.

Still, lab-confirmed deaths globally increased by only about 300 in the past two months and many countries have long since closed the chapter on swine flu. Governments in Europe and North America started dumping vaccines earlier this year after finding their stocks were full of unused and expiring supplies. Health authorities in Britain shut down their pandemic flu hot line in February and canceled vaccine orders by a third back in April as it became clear the pandemic strain would be less dangerous than feared. But she acknowledged that changes may be made to the way WHO defines pandemics. "We need to review the phases, including the severity," she said. Prof. Angus Nicoll, flu program coordinator at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said the decision to declare the pandemic over was consistent with the Stockholm-based body's recent findings.

While flu activity in the northern hemisphere is seasonally low, monitoring in southern hemisphere countries shows that few people are falling seriously ill from swine flu, said Nicoll. Local spikes in flu deaths, such as seen recently in India, are likely due to better surveillance, he said.

Nevertheless, health officials around the world should prepare for a new type of seasonal flu to appear in the near future that will combine elements of the pandemic A(H1N1) strain, and older A(H3N2) strain and several lesser strains, said Nicoll. How To Make A Mummy ?

The mummification process took quite a long time – anything from two to six months. First of all, the internal organs would carefully be removed, with the exception of the heart. This was because the Ancient Egyptians believed the heart contained both spirit and senses, and would be needed on Judgement Day in the Underworld. Once removed, the other internal organs – the lungs, liver, stomach, and intestine – would be cleansed, then placed into special preserving containers called canopic jars.

These jars were often ornately decorated, with unusual lids in the shape of an animal head, the latter representing the god responsible for protecting that particular internal organ. These jars would be carefully placed in the burial chamber, along with the mummy.


The brain was also removed from the deceased and then, the important process of drying the body would begin. Without this, the body would decompose. Preserving salts called natron, found in the Nile Valley, were used as the drying agent. Once the drying procedure was completed, the salts were removed, and the dried body wrapped in yards and yards of linen and resin.

London: Adding a new antiviral drug to the standard treatment for hepatitis C considerably increases the cure rate in severe patients, according to a new study. Paul Kwo of Indiana University School of Medicine reported that the drug nearly doubled the treatment's effectiveness when given for 48 weeks.

Hepatitis C infections occur mainly through transmission of infected blood, such as via injection drug use, and there is no vaccine. It is a leading cause of liver cancer and liver transplantation. Adding the drug boceprevir increased the cure rate to as high as 75 percent in those who received 48 weeks of the three-drug combination therapy.

These patients tested negative for evidence of the virus six months after the end of treatment. "Based on this phase 2 study, it appears that if this drug receives final approval approximately two-thirds of patients will be able to be treated successfully with 28 weeks of treatment and one-third will need 48 weeks of treatment, though this will require confirmation from the phase 3 trials, from which preliminary results were recently released," said Kwo.

Washington: A recent study has found that anti-depressants taken by people with autistic spectrum disorders may have serious side-effects especially in children and cannot be recommended based on current evidence. Cochrane researchers found that despite some evidence of benefits in adults diagnosed with autism, there is no evidence for any benefits associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in children, who may suffer serious adverse effects as a result of taking the drugs.

The researchers included a total of seven trials, involving 271 patients, in their study. The trials evaluated fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, fenfluramine and citalopram. Overall, the researchers found no benefit in the five trials in children and some evidence of serious harm, including one child who suffered a prolonged seizure after taking citalopram.

The two trials in adults were very small and thus, although there was some evidence for improvement in symptoms, the authors concluded there was too little evidence for the drugs to be recommended.

"We can't recommend SSRIs as treatments for children, or adults, with autism at this time. However, decisions about the use of SSRIs for co-occurring obsessive-compulsive disorder, aggression, anxiety or depression in individuals with autism should be made on a case by case basis," said lead author Katrina Williams of the University of New South Wales.

"Not all the SSRIs currently in use have undergone controlled trials for autistic spectrum disorders, but parents are often anxious to try treatments regardless of the lack of evidence. "It's important that doctors are open about the lack of evidence, and explain any risks fully, before prescribing these reatments," said Williams.

Washington: Two astronauts spent more than eight hours outside the International Space Station (ISS), but were unable to make much progress fixing a broken cooling system after part of it proved difficult to disconnect and leaked dangerous ammonia. Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson were to replace the broken 350-kg ammonia cooling loop with a spare part stored about 10 metres away outside the ISS during the spacewalk that began at 1119 GMT.

But one of four ammonia hoses they had to disconnect became stuck causing hours of delays in the work. When Wheelock finally freed the stubborn hose, it leaked a large amount of ammonia, prompting concerns about exposure to coolant.

The astronauts made sure to "bake" any ammonia flakes off their suits by exposing themselves to sunlight and further decontaminated once back inside ISS. The ammonia cooling loop was then left in place and a second spacewalk Wednesday, originally to hook up cables and wire the new part into the station, will now focus on removing the old part and replacing it.

The system is one of two used to keep electronics on the ISS from overheating. Last Saturday, alarms were triggered signalling that the ammonia-based refrigeration system on the ISS had failed due to a power surge.

NASA officials stressed that the six crew members were in no danger, and all critical and many non-critical systems on the ISS were since operating as normal despite the malfunction. The ISS could continue to operate without the cooling system indefinitely, but would be in trouble if the second ammonia cooling loop were to also fail before the first is replaced.

Wheelock and Caldwell Dyson had already trained to replace this part, despite the effort being unplanned, as part of NASA's efforts to prepare ISS crew members for contingencies aboard the station. The US space agency had known that the cooling unit would eventually need to be replaced after about 100,000 hours of use and had installed four extra units outside the ISS as a precaution.

Scientists at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, conducted the above study. The import of nucleus-encoded small RNAs into mitochondria is essential for the replication, transcription and translation of the mitochondrial genome, but the mechanisms that deliver RNA into mitochondria remain poorly understood.

In the current study, UCLA scientists show a new role for a protein called polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPASE) in regulating the import of RNA into mitochondria. Reducing the expression of PNPASE decreased RNA import, which impaired the processing of mitochondrial genome-encoded RNAs.

Reduced RNA processing inhibited the translation of proteins required to maintain the electron transport chain that handles oxygen to produce energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate, the energy currency of a cell. With reduced PNPASE, unprocessed mitochondrial RNAs accumulated, protein translation was inhibited and energy production was compromised, leading to stalled cell growth.

"This discovery tells us that PNPASE regulates the energy producing function of mitochondria by mediating cytoplasmic RNA import. The study yields new insight for how cells function at a very fundamental level. This information provides a potential new pathway to control mitochondrial energy production and possibly impact the growth of cells, including certain types of cancer cells," said Dr. Michael Teitell, co-senior author of the study.

The study could have implications for studying and treating certain cancers, which rely on cellular energy to grow and spread, as well as mitochondrial disorders such as neuromuscular diseases. The study could also result in new ways to think about attacking neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases, which have recently been linked to the function of mitochondria.

Carla Koehler, co-senior author of the study said: "This new and novel pathway for transporting RNA into the mitochondria is shedding new light on the evolving role and importance of mitochondria function in normal physiology and a wide variety of diseases.

If we can understand how this pathway functions in healthy cells we could potentially uncover defects that help in transforming normal cells into cancer cells.

Washington: Mid-August will be a treat for sky gazers, as Saturn, Mars and Venus come into view just as twilight begins to fade out. "Venus will leap out at you. Saturn and Mars will spend the week sliding to the right with respect to Venus, creating a planetary triangle that changes shape from day to day. The crescent Moon joins the twilight planet scene on Thursday, August 12th (when it's below Venus) and Friday the 13th (when it's left of Venus).

Venus shines much brighter due to its close proximity to us, and Mars and Saturn look similar in brightness for reasons that cancel out. Saturn is 35 times larger than Mars, but it's much farther both from us and from the Sun.
